12/8/2009 -- SACRAMENTO -Sacramento Business Journal has reported plans to recruit a university to the former Mather Air Force Base, now known as Mather Commerce Center. Business Journal reported that Pulte, the region's largest homebuilder, is close to a development deal with Sacramento County to seek a public or private university for a proposed 600-acre development. A proposed plan for the site, located near the intersection of Kiefer and Sunrise Boulevards in the southeast corner of the former airbase, might include a 200-acre "university village," as well as 400 acres of housing, retail and commercial development.
The former airbase included 5,718 acres. Since closure in 1993, the Air Force Real Property Agency has transferred 1,529 acres back to the community. Air cargo operations have been developed at the site and plans call for expanding Mather Commerce Center into a Pacific Rim cargo hub. Current uses also include general aviation, other businesses, housing, parks, and recreation areas.
