Jack Brown, CEO of Stater Brothers Markets, wanted to use the historic Norton flag pole outside his corporate headquarters. But the Occupational Health and Safety Administration said it wasn't "wind tested," so Brown brought it indoors and set it up in the lobby.

In the massive headquarters lobby are two displays: one about the history of Stater Brothers markets and another devoted to Capt. Leland Norton. A museum curator designed the exhibit, in which Norton's captain's bars, medals, letters, his Bible, photographs, and other artifacts. The lobby also houses the flag pole once used at Norton AFB.

"Trucks"
Stater Bros. truck fleet and maintenance garage is consolidated at the former Norton in San Bernardino, CA. Stater Brothers is the largest privately-owned supermarket chain in the region. The business got started when a couple of World War II fighter pilots, twin brothers Cleo and Leo Stater, opened a grocery store in Yucaipa, CA in 1936.

ONE LONG AISLE
At the former Norton AFB, Stater Brothers enormous distribution center includes a dry goods facility with a center aisle 233 feet longer than the Empire State Building would be if laid on its side. More than 18,000 items are stacked on steel racks. Workers dart around in rechargeable fork-lift carts assembling orders to be delivered to stores in waiting trucks.

BIG DIGS
Built on the site of the former Norton Air Force Base headquarters, the Stater Brothers complex is the largest food distribution center in America - 2.1 million square feet under one roof. Air Force Real Property Agency deeded the property to the Inland Valley Development Agency, which negotiated an agreement with Stater Bros. and master developer, Hillwood.

Demolition begins for huge medical complex planned for former March AFB
Riverside's dreamy medical complex eventually to be built at the former March Air Force Base gets the spotlight with a visit from California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger who attended the demolition ceremony late July. He described the planned $3.7 billion complex as “the Mayo Clinic of the West.” The plans for the complex include a 150-bed community hospital, outpatient services, medical offices, a senior care facility, retail, and a hotel on 144 acres.
