Natural and manmade events can result in long-term and wide-spread disruptions of the electrical grid. Surface wave systems have the potential to improve Air Force installation grid resilience by providing alternative energy sources when they’re needed, as well as help bypass reliance on the aging transmission infrastructure. Photographed is an example of a “transmitter probe,” that would be located near a power generation plant, to launch a Zenneck carrier wave. Also shown is an example demonstrating the assembly of the passive FIMR units.
