The SAF/IEE Environment Program is responsible for environmental compliance, conservation, and cleanup across the Department of the Air Force’s installations worldwide. We focus on ensuring our Airmen and Guardians, their families, and the communities that host our installations have healthy and resilient environments to live and work in. We coordinate closely with local, state, tribal, and non-governmental organizations, as well as Congress and other federal agencies, to safeguard human health and uphold environmental laws while improving our military readiness in a cost-effective manner.
The DAF Environment Program is executed across the following three pillars.
• Compliance – We ensure our operations comply with applicable U.S. environmental laws, regulations, policies, executive orders, and environmental provisions in related international agreements to provide mission continuity.
• Conservation – We help safeguard the health and condition of the natural, cultural, and tribal resources that exist in the areas where we operate, while balancing mission needs for realistic training environments across a wide variety of habitats and landscapes.
• Cleanup – We are committed to addressing contaminations, such as Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances or PFAS, in soil, water, and affected surrounding areas as a result of our operations. We are working with public and private sector partners to follow mandatory regulatory processes, including the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act (CERCLA) cleanup process, and prioritizing by level of risk.
